4th of July Poem

This weeks blog post is simply a poem I wrote for the 4th of July Holiday Weekend

4th Of July
A country’s reminder
What independence cost
A call to fight for
Independence from Fear
Independence from Hate
Independence from Isolation

Today I call on you
To celebrate those things
Those things which make you free
Love and kindness and story
Dreams and hopes and prayers
Marching and Debating and Listening

Our ideals should be
Our message should be
Our actions should be
To share the truth

You are welcomed and loved
Every nation on earth
You are welcomed and loved
Every faith tradition
You are welcomed and loved
Every gender and sexuality
You are welcomed and loved
Every physical and mental ability

You are welcomed and loved
You are welcomed and loved
You are welcomed and loved

Today we will celebrate
A collection of immigrants
Who stood up
Spoke out
Wrote out
A message to the world

All are welcomed and loved
All are welcomed and loved
All are welcomed and loved

We may often fall short of this ideal
And forget that
Black Lives Matter
Immigrant Lives Matter
Intersections of identity matter
Minorities Matter

But today we eat and celebrate
Our ideal country
And plan how to make it even
Kinder and wiser and more loving

All are welcomed and loved
All are welcomed and loved
All are welcomed and loved
