When The Supreme Court Harms Us All

Once again the supreme court has decided that harming others is the best policy. They harmed us all by overturning Roe v Wade last summer. They harm us all with today's anti-affirmative action judgment. I am tried, tired of having my found siblings, my found friends, my found family harmed again and again and again.

As Michelle Obama put it:

I do not know what to do with a supreme court that enjoys causing harm. I don't know how to make them take an Hippocratic Oath. I don't know how to make them understand the impact of racism and sexism and homophobia and transphobia and ableism and all the other phobias and isms. I don't know what to do, so I wrote a poem to get some of what I am feeling out.

Today’s Supreme Court Ruling

Does harm to every single person

College should be filled with

Learning wisdom from those who’s

Life experience is wonderfully different

College should not be limited to

Those who are white and rich enough

College should be an opportunity

To think new thoughts and debate

Those thoughts. What makes a

Meaningful life? What is the purpose

Of work? How can we together

Build a Better Community? Better Nation?

Better World? Everyone should be

Able to choose whether college makes

Sense for them or if a different path

Is the adventure that they choose,

People should not be punished for

Attending a high school with fewer

Extracurriculars. People should not be

Punished for lower grades because

They had to care for family members

Or work in order to make sure they

Had food to eat each morning, night.

Punished for multigenerational

Disinvestment. Punished for struggling.

Punished because their ancestors were

Ripped from their homeland, or stolen

Punished because they face the fear

That a cop might shoot them at any time

Education should be the great equalizer

Education should be the great equalizer

Education should be the great equalizer

Today’s Supreme Court Ruling

Does harm to every single person

I am so so so very tired of the courts

Efforts to harm every single person

Intersections Of Identity aka Oh That Is Why People Are So Confusing

This evening I watched the live stream of Queering Culture featuring Matt Baume via the Chicago Public Library. It was a discussion of queer representation and queer coding within the history of sitcoms. When discussing the conversation with a friend (and them asking what queer coding was) I mentioned how I am not someone who picks up on queer representation or queer coding unless it is spelled out for me.

And it is very much an issue of not picking up on it, the same way I don't pick up on most things when it comes to people being people. Honestly I often lean on fanfiction or commentaries to provide the context of what characters are experiencing or why they are behaving the way they are:

  • "Oh fanfiction says that character is considered "sexy" interesting"
  • "Oh fanfiction says that shirt/sweater/fill in the blank looks really good on them"
  • "Oh fanfiction says that bit where they were acting really oddly they were actually flirting"
  • "Oh fanfiction says those characters are meant to be in a romantic relationship not just friends"
  • "Oh that academic paper says that character is coded as queer"

I will say that in the past I was confused why I never picked up on LGBTQ+ themes unless they were explicitly mentioned. Which was odd considering how highly I value LGBTQ+ representation. I think I thought it was just because I am Ace and that is why I did not pick up on things. However, now I have the fact I'm autistic as an additional explanation.

In some ways this makes me feel better knowing that my inability to pick up on coded queerness is not some sign that I somehow really don't belong in queer spaces. Nor that I am simply "naïve" considering via fan fiction I feel like I could pass a basic quiz on kinks, safe BSMD procedures, etc LOL. In reality it is more likely just an offshoot of my deeper not understanding what makes most people act the way they do.

The better I understand the intersections of my identities the more I understand why people are so confusing so much of the time. So writers, commentators, academics, etc. keep pointing out all the queer representation especially that representation which is coded representation so that I can see and celebrate it.

Showing Myself Kindness This Summer

Right now I am focused on being gentle with myself. This includes having a gentle summer. For the past several years I have compiled a list of summer activities I have done around Chicago. I do this so that when the summer is over I can look back and see that no matter what it might feel like I have enjoyed lots of activities.

The last several years I have done over 100 activities over the course of summer. That is where showing myself kindness/being gentle with myself comes in this year. While I will still track what I do, I will be "throwing away the plan" that I have to do 100 activities to say I took advantage of summer in Chicago. I am sure I will get to lots of activities but I am not planning on stressing about it.

I am going to get to stuff that looks interesting or activities that are close to my apartment. However, I am not going to hyperfocus on doing stuff just to add to my summer activity list. Am I going to get to everything happening in Chicago this summer? Nope. Did I get to everything when I was hyperfocused on doing 100 activities? Nope.

I hope we all can have a gentle summer where we are able to refuel ourselves, our minds, our bodies, our sprits. Yes summer can be a very busy time filled with fun and adventure but remember you don't have to do it all. So get outside when you can, go for a walk when you can, and create a summer of growth and healing.

Hello June, Hello Pride

Pride Poem
By Dreaming Ace

Honor Pride, Celebrate Pride

Pride found at the multifaceted

Intersection of gender + sexuality

Pride that survives even as this

Country seems to seek to destroy

All those who are big and bold

Pride that survives even as this

Country seems to seek to destroy

All those who know who they are

Pride that survives even as this

Country seems to seek to destroy

All those who march to their own beat

Honor Pride, Celebrate Pride

Remember the riot, the riot of justice

Led by our Trans Women of Color

The riot that must continue today

The riot that must be remembered today

The fight continues for Life

The riot that must continue today

The riot that must be remembered today

The fight continues for Liberty

The riot that must continue today

The riot that must be remembered today

The fight continues for Love

Honor Pride, Celebrate Pride

Know that you are loved, are beloved

Honor Pride, Celebrate Pride

Know that you are loved, are beloved

Ace and Aro, Bi and Pan, Single and Polyamory

Know that you are loved, are beloved

Know that you are loved, are beloved

Trans and Intersex, Nonbinary and Nonconforming

Know that you are loved, are beloved

Know that you are loved, are beloved

Open and out, Closteted and Afraid

Know that you are loved, are beloved

Honor Pride, Celebrate Pride

The riot that must continue today

Know that you are loved, are beloved

A Celebration of Time Travel Recap

Yesterday was the 10th Annual DePaul Pop Culture Conference. It was noted a few times that I had been to all 10 conferences so far. This means I have been to the most conferences because last year Paul Booth who runs the conference had Covid and could not attend.

The very first conference was on Doctor Who so having the 10th be on Time Travel felt very fitting. I attended the first one on Doctor Who after hearing about it from one of the Doctor Who groups I was part of and had such a great time with fellow fans and academics that I have returned for every one.

Here are some notes from panels I attended. If you want to know more about these subjects buy the charity book where many of us expand on our topics. Personally I would suggest getting it here and supporting my wonderful Three Avenues Bookshop in addition to supporting this years charity Inside Circle.

Pictured are my new friends Dylan Pank and John Caro from England
We ended up talking and hanging out together for a lot of the conference :)

The first panel I attended was Time Travel in Education.

Jesus Magallon – “(With Regards To Bill & Ted…) Edutainment’s Excellent Adventure: Exploring Point-and-Click Edutainment Gaming Via Comparative Time Travel Narratives”

Dylan Pank and John Caro – “‘I suggest you don’t worry about those things and just enjoy yourself.’: Time Travel, the Scientist and the Evolution of Narrative Conventions”

Dylan and John look at how the role of the scientist has changed as time travel stories have been developed. This includes the scientist as protagonist, as antagonist (mainly telling people they should not change history just for love), as helper/expositional device, and as super hero.

LaTiana Ridgell – “Time Traveling Through the PhD: An Autoethnographic Study of Reflexivity in Doctoral Studies”

Pictured: Caroline M. Yoachim
Literary Keynote.

Caroline M. Yoachim. “The Psychology of Time Travel Stories: Understanding Our World by Changing the Rules”

This talk covered how we try to make sense of the world via counter-factual reasoning. It also covered how we love to create plausible stories about why we do things. It also covered how agency includes choosing not to do something. There was also a reference to the idea that even if our choices are fixed does not mean they do not matter (for example what we chose to do yesterday is now fixed but we could decide at that time, and even if we want back and time and could not change our choices it would not mean we can't make meaningful choices). There likewise was the suggestion that in science fiction there is a push to explain time travel where as in fantasy you can do a bit more hand waving.

Writing and Reading Time Travel.

Rebecca Johns-Trissler, Mary Anne Mohanraj, Nancy McCabe

When writing time travel stories we have to manage how much research we do. If we love research we can run wild, but some use research as a form of procrastination (when someone has been researching for 10 years but has not created any drafts). One reader will always point out every mistake you made in your time travel, but you're not composing for them. When writing it comes down to where to begin, who will tell the story, and how much you want to translate for the reader. All stories involve time management in terms of where to start the story. This may be different for time travel stories. In these stories, you might have 50 or 60 pages about the person's life before they travel in time, instead of jumping into the action.

Professional Keynote.

Jana Sinyor - “We Are All Time Travelers: Repeated patterns that wreck your life. Where they come from and how to change them.”

Started out in TV and wrote for several shows that included time travel including "Being Erica" with time travel therapists. Realized that while she had the skills and evidence for it, she did not have the passion for it. She switched and becoming a therapist instead. She shared how we often hyperfixate on our image of the world (and ignore anything that contradicts that image) and when we give up that image we don't know who we are anymore. We need to be willing to feel the feelings we suppressed in the first place which is very challenging to do. Most of what we think is rational is really emotional avoidance. Most adults are numb to their emotions. TV and film are safe places to feel emotions. Part of her job as a therapist is helping people feel safe about being out of control.

Steve Clairmont – “You’ve Turned Jules Verne into a Hood Ornament” – Disney’s The Timekeeper

Lisa Rothman – “What's The Point Of Time Traveling If You're Not Having Fun? (An Exploration of Legends of Tomorrow, Doctor Who, and Hob Gadling)”

Owen Smith – “The Once and Future Jungle: Interrogating Time Travel from a Mythical Perspective”

Pictured Dr. Ronald Mallett and the formula that allows time travel to actually occur

Scientific Keynote.

Dr. Ronald Mallett - “The Real Science of Time Travel”

Time travel is possible and has the potential to happen today. This is what happens at the Large Hadron Collider | CERN. While high speeds (towards the speed of light) can cause time travel in the forward direction it does not work to go backwards in time (sorry every show that has used that as a method.) Light effects gravity effects time means light can effect time. We can create ways to travel back in time but they only work when they are turned on. (Which I realized means that even though we have not run across time travelers yet, it does not mean they won't exist. They just might not be able to get this far back in time.)

Also Dr Mallett mentioned how there is likely life in other parts of the universe (goldilocks planets) so if we find a time traveling race that set up their time travel devices before the earth was created we might be able to go way back in time at some point) Travelling to the future does not cause paradoxes, going to the past could but with the many worlds/parallel universe model if you did go back in time and changed something it would not matter because its not your timeline aka no actual grandfather paradox.

Time Travel in Film.

*Samuel Crider – “Second Chances: Time Travel Wish Fulfillment in Avengers: Endgame”

Kara Kvaran – “Going Back in Time: Race, Gender, and the Lure of Cinematic Nostalgia”

Katie Utke – “The Future Is What You Make of It: The Legacy of Back to the Future”

Kara Kvaran's talk was interesting and covered the fact that when people travel back in time in films 87% of the time the person who travels through time is a white cis-gendered able-bodied male identified individual even though they only make up 31% of the US population. Many films take us back to the same nostalgic eras where they can avoid wrestling with race, gender, sexuality etc. Even when time travel is completely accidental in the movie they still travel in time to the same nostalgic eras (like traveling in time to the American revolution, or WW2 verses the civil war or WW1 since those later ones were more messy).

All too often it is a white dude who decides what is better for everyone when he time travels without asking anyone else. In addition way too often women are marginalized (the I fell in love with someone in the past, I come back to the present, see you look like my lost love, and realize I never really lost my love) or women who decide to stay in the past because of love ignoring the challenges she will face such as having high mother mortality rates etc. (as Kyaran says "Love does not defeat cholera")

Eurovision 2023: Feel Good Music As Mental Health Breaks

When we think about mental health it is important to think about the small things we all can do when we are feeling somehow. Ways we can get what we are experiencing out of us. Or as Wentworth Miller once stated in a Q &A with students at Oxford:

Just moments where I am doing what I need to do to make sure that I vibrate at the right frequency that might look like burning some sage, that might look like dinner out with a friend, that might look like a bath with Epsom salts – just the things that I need to do for myself that are small, doable, affordable, that nourish me.

One such small thing that is available to pretty much everyone is music. There is something about fun music which can boost our moods when our brains are being grumpy, our emotions are confusing, or we are dealing with "feelings" The great thing is we can listen to music when we are alone, and when we are with others. And we can always turn music into an impromptu dance party which can make us feel even better.

If you are looking for songs to make you feel good checking out the contestants for Eurovision is a good place to start. Last year I really enjoyed the one about a vegetarian wolf (or at least a omnivore wolf) aka Give That Wolf A Banana from Norway and the one about Autism Not The Same from Australia.

There is something about a good a beat and some odd or silly lyrics that puts me in a better mood. I have not listen to all of this year's songs but those I have are a lot of fun. Some that stand out to me so far include:

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

By Dreaming Ace

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

So we need to take care of our mental health

So we need to understand others mental health

All of us dragons, need to take care of ourselves

So we can enjoy May’s flowers after April showers

Life/living can feel hard edged

The world feel sharp/cutting/brittle

It can all feel like unbreakable code

“Life, the Universe, and Everything”

Does not always neatly add up to 42

If we feel lost we are not alone

If we feel without a map we are not alone

If we feel scattered we are not alone

If we feel like we are from a Different Multiverse,

Different Timeline We Are Not Alone

Stay in bed, or go for the walk, or have the tea

Read the book, or watch the show, or listen to the music

Make the food, or order the food, or bring in the food

Do the reflection, or do the yoga, or drink the glass of water

Dance, or write, or draw, or sing, or nap

Breathe, or create, or meditate

Or as Wentworth Miller once said take “moments

where (we are) doing what (we) need to do to make

sure that (we) vibrate at the right frequency …

just the things that (we) need to do for (ourselves)

that are small, doable, affordable, that nourish (us).”

Sometimes we know what we are feeling

Sometimes we know what we are experiencing

Sometimes we know what we are thinking

Sometimes we know what we are doing

And sometimes we do not which is 100% fine

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

So we need to take care of our mental health

So we need to understand others mental health

All of us dragons, need to take care of ourselves

So we can enjoy May’s flowers after April showers

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the United States since 1949. This year the theme is "More Than Enough."

As NAMI states:

It’s an opportunity for all of us to come together and remember the inherent value we each hold — no matter our diagnosis, appearance, socioeconomic status, background or ability. We want every person out there to know that if all you did was wake up today, that’s more than enough. No matter what, you are inherently worthy of more than enough life, love and healing. Showing up, just as you are, for yourself and the people around you is more than enough.

This week has been a week where my brain was wibbly wobbly and everything felt like an "impossible task" (as seen by when I am getting to write this post) I will write more as the month progresses but for right now this is enough. Take care of yourself and your mental health.
